This morning on my way to work, I encountered a small white dog. He was wearing a tag and collar, and was crossing a very busy street all alone.
I blinked several times and even shook my head, but a glance at my rear view showed me he was still there.
I swerved to the side of the street, parked and ran like hell. I ran up and down the street, into alleys, through parking lots. I asked everyone if they'd seen him, I craned my head desperately side to side. He was not there. I could not find him.
I ran because he was small and the street was busy. I ran because I wanted to save him, to give his family a happy ending. But I think mostly I ran for you. For every moment you wandered alone last week, for every second that we couldn't find you. For the times I was in a hurry and didn't stop to smooch your sweet face.
I am so sorry. That I didn't find him, but really that I couldn't find you.
I ran and I ran but you are still gone. I would run forever to change that.
I miss you so much.
